  HERITAGE WALK, Baltimore City

HERITAGE WALK, Baltimore City, [www.heritagewalk.org] is a 3.2 mile walking trail through 4 fascinating centuries of American history. The trail connects 20 historic sites/museums in a compact area that spans 4 city neighborhoods: the Inner Harbor, Little Italy, Historic Jonestown, and City Center. A dramatic reading will accompany a pause at each of the 20 sites/museums. Step off at 10 am from Henderson’s Wharf, 1000 Fell St, Balt 21231 (410-522-7777) [www.hendersonswharf.com]. A.A.Co. folks: Meet at Truman Pkwy park/ride lower lot off Riva Rd near Annapolis at 8:45 am. part at 9 am. Carpool in caravan taking I-97 to I-695, Balt. Beltway. Take inner loop N. towards Towson. [DC folks: pick up here.] Follow I-95 N. into Balt. Take exit 53 (I-395 N.). As I-395 ends, continue onto Howard St. Go a couple blocks and turn right on Pratt St. Follow Pratt past the Inner Harbor. At President St. turn right. Stay on President as it turns to left & becomes Fleet St. Follow Fleet for several blocks. Turn right on S. Ann St. Follow Ann to Thames St., waterfront is directly ahead. Bear slightly left crossing Thames onto Fell St. Meet at Henderson's Wharf (inn) at end of Fell St. on R. side at 9:45 a.m. [Balt. folks: It’s your town. You can find Henderson’s!] Map/details will be provided. Bring snax to share, and water. Boots are not necessary, but always preferred. Canines are discouraged but, if present, shall be leashed. Length ‚ 4.4 miles (Henderson’s is about 3/4 M. from the trail); Configuration – Key (out & back + loop); Difficulty – Easy (very); Scenery: Urban (very) & Patapsco waterfront; Exposure: Open; Traffic – Weather dependant, some could be crowded; most not; Surface – Paved; Time: 2 hrs; Facilities – Plenty. Post-hike possibilities include lunch at Henderson’s, Little Italy, or Inner Harbor. Hike is “show and go.” No RSVPs please.

   C&O Canal Towpath in Great Falls Area  

  Out-and-back hike of 7 mostly scenic miles between Old Anglers Inn and turnaround spot 1.2 miles beyond Great Falls Tavern, with great views of Potomac River. Followed by optional posthike party at almost-nearby Potomac Pizza to schmooze and replace calories. Leashed dogs welcome (on hike only). Meet at 10 a.m. at public parking lot across MacArthur Blvd. from inn. Joint event with Sierra/MWROP. Call if carless or for directions.

   U. S. National Arboretum   

  Circuit hike of 8 gently rolling miles, mostly paved, in exotic landscape featuring rare trees, flowers in bloom, one mountain, one bonsai/penjing museum, one historic site, microdoses of history, and a Capitol treat. Leashed dogs okay. Meet at 10 a.m. in arboretumís R St. parking lot. Call for directions or if carless (Metrobus X6 runs directly into parking lot from Union Station [visit www.wmata.com]; take 9:50 a.m. bus from station and you'll get to trailhead in time to do hike). Joint event with Sierra/MWROP.

  Rosaryville State Park Perimeter Trail

   7.5 mile dayhike on a squiggly loop trail in rolling woodlands, with a side-trip to Mt. Airy mansion. Moderate grades and a moderate pace. Near Upper Marlboro MD.

   Capital Crescent Trail  

  Out-and-back hike of 10.2 miles on former right-of-way of historic railroad through lovely wooded sections of NW DC and adjoining parts of Montgomery County, with optional indoor lunch stop in Bethesda. Total of 700 feet of elevation gain on a few hills. Meet at 10 a.m. in upper parking lot of Fletchers Boathouse, off Canal Rd (if that lot is full, park in lower lot and walk back). Call if carless or for lunch details. Joint event with Sierra/MWROP.

  Key-Chain Circuit, Potomac Heritage Trail & C&O Canal

   9.3 mile circuit starting at Fletcher's Boathouse on the C&O Canal, to Key Bridge, and then following the Potomac Heritage Trail on the W. shore to Chain Bridge, including waterfalls, cliffs, steep, rocky & rugged terrain. Steady rain, slippery conditions, or floods cancel. DC residents can join us at Key Bridge.

   Speedy Sunday Morning Walk in Fairfax City  

   Warmly explore a new trail system in this small, park-rich suburban Virginia community by covering 6.5 miles in about 2.5 hours. Meet at 9 a.m. at Vienna Metro station's north parking lot (train riders: bear right on emerging outdoors at station). Joint event with Sierra/MWROP. Leashed dogs welcome (but check first with leaders).

  Brookland, NE Washington

A.A.Co. folks: Meet at Truman Pkwy park/ride lower lot off Riva Rd near Annapolis at 8:45 am. Eat breakfast & get gas first. Depart at 9 a.m. Carpool in caravan taking US Rte 50 westbound to D.C. [Balt. folks: Get to US Rte 50 either via Capital Beltway or B-W Pkwy.] Just after entering DC, exit onto N.D. Av. Cross US Rte 1 (R.I. Av) and turn left on Monroe St. (note Brooks Tav. @ 9th St). At tee, turn left on Michigan Av, then right on Harewood Rd to Basilica parking lot on left. [DC/VA folks: Pick your own way thru DC to the Basilica or take the red line on MetroRail to Bookland-CUA station. Exit station on CUA side and walk across campus.] Meet at 9:45 a.m. on Harewood sidewalk adjacent to lot entrance. Look for “AMC” hand sign. Step off at 10 a.m. Map/details will be provided. Bring snax to share, and water. Boots are not necessary, but always preferred. Canines are discouraged but, if present, shall be leashed.   A scenic 13.5-mile out-and-back hike along the Potomac River between Mount Vernon and Dyke Marsh, with a loop through Fort Hunt Park. Meet at 9 a.m. at north end of Mount Vernonís east parking lot. Joint event with Sierra/MWROP.

  Discover Somerset County (Deal Island)

   Sixth Annual Somerset County Sampler. February 18, 2007. Discover the Deal Island NWR. Ten mile flat, dike-top loop with spectacular views of Tangier Sound. See thousands of Tundra Swans, many Great Blue Herons, and Bald Eagles. Meet at 9:00AM at the Lowe's parking lot off the Easton Parkway (MD322). Dinner afterward at Suicide Bridge in Secretary, MD. Directions to those signed up, ten days before. We hike rain or shine. Contact leaders for reservations. Limited to 20.

   Lands of Rolling Ridge Foundation and AT  

  Two-part excursion separated by lunch and totaling 9.4 miles and 2,600 feet of elevation change at moderate pace, mostly in secluded and private nature preserve on forested western flanks of Blue Ridge just inside West Virginia. First part will feature climb to AT and vista-rich Crescent Rock, and cover 6.4 miles with 2,000 feet of elevation change. Second part will be an easy out-and-back to the Shenandoah River. By arrangement with leader, you can do either or both partsóand also partake of late lunch at Niles Cabin (bring snacks, anyway). To carpool, meet at 8 a.m. at Vienna Metro station's north parking lot (train riders: bear right on emerging outdoors at station). Joint event with Sierra/MWROP. Lunch options: Bring your own or reserve $5 omnivore or veggievore meal prepared by resident chef Sheila (call leader by Feb. 22 to make reservation).

  Experience a new trail in Montgomery County by doing one-way 10-mile hike at moderate pace from Black Hill Regional Park to Seneca Creek State Park by way of Hoyles Mill Conservation Park (car shuttle required). To carpool, meet at 9 a.m. Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro station, open-air Park & Ride lot (just behind garage). Joint event with Sierra/MWROP.

  Rachel Carson Greenway/Sligo Creek Trail

    Do either a 21-mile circuit or a 15-mile circuit while watching for spring and giving your springy legs a healthy workout on natural-surface and paved woodland trails--and a few stretches of sidewalk--along the Northwest Branch and Sligo Creek stream valleys of the Maryland suburbs. En route, you'll get close to nature and learn about suburban environmental challenges (thanks in part to the Friends of Sligo Creek [www.fosc.org] and the Neighbors of Northwest Branch). Be sure to bring lunch and ample drinking water. Meet at 9 a.m. at the athletic fields parking lot in Wheaton Regional Park--near the bathrooms and soda machines. Call the leaders for driving directions or Metro station pickup. Joint hike with Sierra/MWROP.
