  • The Appalachian Mountain Club is an annual dues-paying not-for-profit organization of approximately 90,000 members organized into twelve regional chapters from Maine to the Washington, D.C., area. At Club-wide level, the affairs of the club organization are managed by a professional, paid, full-time staff located mainly in Boston, with additional employees located in Augusta, Maine, Gorham and Pinkham Notch, New Hampshire, Pittsfield, Massachusetts and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

At the chapter level, the AMC is a volunteer-led organization with each chapter having its own set of by-laws and an Executive Committee consisting of annually elected officers, some with term limits, appointed committee chairs, and appointed at-large members.

Chapter funding is provided by a sharing of the Club annual dues with each chapter in proportion to the chapter’s membership. Additionally, special funding requests and assistance are available from the Club upon request.

According to our by-laws, the Executive Committee of the Washington, D.C. chapter shall have four elected officers: Chapter Chair, Chapter Vice-Chair, Chapter Secretary, and Chapter Treasurer. The number of appointed committee chairs is dependent upon the kinds and number of activities desired by the members of the chapter, and the administrative and communication needs of the chapter members and officers. The Executive Committee may also have up to three at-large members appointed by the Executive Committee.

The Chapter Chair is the Chief Administrative officer of the Chapter, responsible for conduct of the business of the chapter in accordance with its by-laws.

The term of the Chapter Chair is limited to two successive one-year terms. After an absence of at least two years, the Chapter Chair may run for office again. There are no term limits for the other three elected officers of the chapter.

The list of the members of the chapter Executive Committee for 2007 and their contact information follows.

The chapter by-laws require that the Executive Committee meet at least six times per annum to conduct the business and administrative affairs of the chapter. Roberts Rules of Order are to be followed at all such meetings. The dates, times, and locations of these meetings, as well as their agenda and minutes, must be made available to all members. This information is included in this section, and, as such, is considered to be a public record and notification of such.

The by-laws require that an annual meeting and election of officers be held each November, with proper advance notification and call for nominations, in accordance with Roberts Rules of Order. Notification of such meeting and election of officers is accomplished through publication in the chapter newsletter and posting of such information on the chapter and club websites.

Communication regarding chapter events is accomplished through four media: the club-wide website: outdoors.org; the chapter website: amc-dc.org; the club-wide magazine, Outdoors, published 10 times per year; and the chapter newsletter, published four times per year. Additionally, some event leaders maintain e-mail distribution lists for notification of chapter members on those lists regarding their events.

Lastly, regarding chapter management, the Club holds four meetings per year at which chapter officers, specifically, the Chair, the Membership Chair, and the Conservation Chair meet to share chapter goals, objectives, management techniques, and ideas that make for active, vibrant chapters. Three of these meetings, the Club-wide Annual Meeting in January, and the Spring Gathering in April and the Fall Gathering in October, are open to all AMC members. The gatherings are run by the chapters, with location rotating through the twelve. They are intended to be fun, inter-chapter outdoor events with hiking, biking, paddling and other activities for the enjoyment of attendees.
